Panel discussion: Awareness and Prevention of Human Trafficking 

Learn what area law enforcement and social service workers are doing in our area to combat this horrible abuse.

Moderator

Carla Damron, LISW-CP, novelist, social worker and advocate, her novel, The Orchid Tattoo, examines how human trafficking happens. Written to raise awareness and educate about this crime, the novel has won four literary awards and soon will be released as an audio book. A percentage of royalties are donated to Doors To Freedom, which serves survivors of human trafficking.

Detective Brandon Avidon: Officer with the Rock Hill Police Department and co-chair of the Catawba Chapter of the SC Human Trafficking Task Force.

Brian Collins: Assistant Training Coordinator with Lancaster County EMS, Community Outreach/Education Chair of the Catawba Chapter of the SC Human Trafficking Task Force, SC representative of the International Bodyguard and Security Services Association Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force. He has spoken with more than 1,500 first responders and community members in five states on human trafficking recognition.

 Lisa Glazebrook: Child Advocacy Center (CAC) Coordinator at Safe Passage. She received her BA in Psychology from The University of North Carolina-Charlotte in 2011 and a Master of Social Work from Winthrop University in 2015. With Safe Passage since 2015, Lisa and has been involved in over 2,000 cases of alleged child abuse. Safe Passage CAC provides forensic interviews, child abuse medical exams, advocacy, counseling, and coordination with the multidisciplinary team that includes law enforcement, DSS, prosecutors and medical staff. Lisa is co-chair of the Catawba Regional Human Trafficking Task Force. 

Khoury Hammond: Special Agent with SLED’s Human Trafficking unit in the Upstate area. He follows up with local and federal partners on labor and sex trafficking complaints/cases, working with DSS. He also conducts and attends trainings, assists with juvenile recoveries, works undercover prostitution and illicit massage parlor operations and attends Human Trafficking Task Force meetings.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Month.

Our namesake for Bakhita Arts, St. Josephine Bakhita, is the patron saint of victims of human trafficking. Her feast day is Feb. 8.
